Are the French generally tolerant of gay people?

One of my best guy friends is going to Paris for an internship soon. He wants to know if he can expect people to be okay with the fact that he is gay. He's fairly discreet about it (not flamboyant), but he just wants to make sure it won't be a problem if they just happen to find out.
