What does an LLC protect me from?

With an LLC, you're liable only for the amount of money you put into the business, not the debts and contracts the business enters into itself. However, this is only true if you're careful to uphold all of the required formalities -- keeping detailed records of your meetings, keeping your personal finances separate from the company's finances, and so on -- if you don't, the courts may hold you personally liable.
